Before we get into ingredients, you have at least seen these terms on products (or actively avoiding or looking for specific terms/ingredients especially if you have sensitive skin prone to redness like me):
- Hypoallergenic: decreased chance of allergic reaction
- Noncomedogenic: will not cause blocked pores
- Sulfates: foaming agents found in shampoos and soaps than can irritate and dry out your skin and scalp. Sulfate-free options may help topical issues.
- Parabens/Phytates: preservatives found in cosmetics, skin care, fragrances, and even plastics to give products a longer shelf life. There have been many claims over the years that these preservatives have caused health issues for many individuals. If you are trying to live a cleaner lifestyle, Paraben-Free and Phytate-Free options are readily available.
- Silicone: commonly used in hair care products for anti-frizz and shine, but can build up over time, leaving hair dry, limp, and lifeless.
- Fragrances: Self-explanatory, but sometimes products don’t specify WHAT fragrances are in products or where they came from. If you are sensitive to scents, look for fragrance-free or low-fragrance products.
- Antioxidants, which include vitamins and plant-derived extracts, are your friend! They help block and slow down free radicals in the air that cause damage from the sun, smoke, pollution, and stressors that cause wrinkles, sagging, dull skin texture, and more premature aging of our skin.
